So lovely and refreshing to see blue skies again a So lovely and refreshing to see blue skies again after a long, smoky summer and fall. I always love this time leading up to winter solstice. Mountain daylight, short as it is each day, is so clear. People talk a lot about thinning veils in fall, but I feel it more acutely now, between past and future. I like to think the winter world provides cover of darkness to reflect on our thoughts, fears, regrets, memories, and hopes.

Reflect, heh, see what I did there?

I have nothing philosophic to offer on 2020 except to acknowledge my good fortune despite my difficulties with this horrible virus. So many people have suffered this year: irretrievable loss, crippling fear, insurmountable difficulty, unwanted change, unaccountable hatred. Just please know I see you.

My brother and I have been tracing our people back My brother and I have been tracing our people back several generations, mostly to England and Scotland. One line came to Plymouth in the New colonies prior to 1640!
🌊
We thought our Scottish roots stem from Paisley based on a will that mentions his father's birthplace. But I'm finding some conflicting info that indicates Hugh Fraser was actually born in Kilmorack, Inverness-shire. Lovely place, Inverness. I rather hope the new sources are right because the area felt oddly like home when I was there. (Also, based on the spelling inconsistancies of names in the will I'm not sure old George Hugh Frazier/Fraiser/Fraser at 100 years of age would remember precisely where in Scotland his father Hugh was born) Distant family lore claims Hugh was transported at a very young age as an indentured servant in 1715 or so, never to see his parents again.
😳
The dates are mildly impressive. We are quite firmly American and I wonder which generation decided they were no longer Scottish but Something Else. But I'm mostly interested as a storyteller. Also seeing first names follow the generations is curious and heartwarming.
