the trifecta of making art
I had an interesting conversation about talent with my younger son the other day. (He's an artist and you can see his work here.) He is very talented and also mostly self-taught, so he resists learning more about something he already knows a lot about. He has a particular style and genre he prefers, so convincing him he needs to draw things outside his wheelhouse is a challenge. I get it. When I was a kid I wrote stories resembling The Outsiders and I drew horses. That's pretty much it. I was good at those things, and not much else ...

new anthology story
Straight Outta Deadwood amazon | barnes & noble | indiebound I have a new David Cook story out! "The Petrified Man" takes place in Creede, Colorado in 1892 at the height of the silver boom after Jefferson "Soapy" Smith had settled in to become town boss and run a saloon, in addition to his other cons. One of them was a "Petrified Man," which Soapy actually owned for a bit, and there my story divulges from history... It's virtually certain Soapy Smith and General Cook knew of each other, if in fact they weren't actually acquainted. I decided to make ...

what i learned after a year off facebook
"Oh, right. You're not on Facebook." I don't know things because people often only communicate on Facebook. When I hear that line it makes me think the onus is on me to keep up with everyone's lives, especially since I don't make it easy for them because I'm not available on one particular social platform. Dude. I'm on Twitter and Instagram. I have email, texting, a reliable phone, and I'm extremely google-able. None of this is new. I've been super googleable under my name for about 15 years now. I've been online daily since 2004. It's not like I live ...

habits
I just read this book SUPERHUMAN BY HABIT by Tynan. I found it to be a bit of a supercilious little book, but it got me to reframing how I think about some things. Most of what's been on my mind is tummy troubles and not writing as much as I want. Yes, basically, EAT LESS, WRITE MORE is the title of my autobiography. (thx to Teresa Frohock for the joke) I've made all kinds of excuses about my eating more and writing less, some of them even legitimate (like a teenager still at home and family health issues). But ...

MalCon
Hi. I really should post here more but this is a fairly quiet part of the internet lately. It's summer and I've been summering. Spending time in the mountains, watching baseball, drinking cold beers with friends and family. I have not written much but as it's August, school starts in a couple of weeks, I'll be back at it hard starting this week. I've returned to a more traditional fantasy inspired by Robin Hood and Roma. There's a popular tweet going around: Five things about my WIP, so here are mine. Postal magicRelics with tattoosThieves and DebtsHumorNonbinary and Transfolk Despite ...
